THE AMATEUR PROFESSIONAL

When I finished competing on The European Tour, I spent 10 years as a tour coach working with young tour professionals competing on the worlds mini tours. The main part of my role was more of a business management coach, assessing how effective the players practice rounds, tournament rounds & post round analysis were. There was a common trend that I noticed, the vast majority of professionals were what I call amateur professionals, they were running a potential multi million pound golfing business with no business training or skills.

They had ability, work ethic, motivation but they struggled to run a business & all the regular planning & tasks required to be successful. They started the game a s an amateur, progressed to a level to turn professional, turned professional then struggled to think like a businessman or business woman.

This included struggling to be effective doing effective week or tournament reviews, planning a year, problem solving, building a team around you that will hit you with the facts & not just put you on a peddle stool. This was common…

Over the years I have coached 1,000’s of amateur players, most of which had careers or businesses, they were professionals, they had been taught to run a business or trained to be part of a business team, they learnt processes, procedures, created SOP’s to make life as easy & repeatable as possible, especially when it got really busy. These skills are clearly transferable into life & in this instance golf. Here’s the interesting point, most professional amateurs are exactly that, professional in all areas of their life except their golf, they have an amateur approach to their game. Now yes they are amateurs but that doesn’t stop a player using the skills they already possess to improve their game.

So here is the interesting point, professional amateurs need amateur professionals to learn how to play the game, amateur professionals need to be surrounded by professional amateurs to learn how to run their business more effectively!
